![]() ![]() Before you know it, they’re saying you have so much in common, therefore you must be soul mates.”- Dale Archer, M.D., Why Love-Bombing In A Relationship Is So Devious 3. Masquerading as ‘good listeners,’ the bomber gathers intel on your likes, dislikes, insecurities, hopes, and dreams. “Manipulative love bombers don’t just walk up and say: ‘We belong together.’ They have to give you evidence that it’s true. By doing this, you communicate an important boundary to those around you: trust has to be built organically and cannot be earned blindly. It’s a good rule to have regarding anyone, regardless of whether or not they’re toxic, because it allows intimacy to unfold naturally at its own pace. Be selective about who you allow into your online spaces and make your privacy a top priority. Solution? Don’t give them much access in the first place. It is also valuable for the devaluation stage, as it allows them to assess whether you’d be a viable target for their pity ploys and mind games. These investigative digs are crucial for the narcissist’s love-bombing stage, where they are first pursuing you with ardent fervor and need to unearth your vulnerabilities to do so. Remember, it’s possible for even a complete stranger to find out your life story should they do the due diligence of looking through your photos, your tagged posts, even your ‘About Me’ section. Having access to your social media accounts can give them an easy way to find out more about your likes, interests, hobbies, and desires. They want to know anything and everything about you, so that they can later use your wounds against you. Imagine that narcissists are like trained spies in the figurative Trojan horses that are social media accounts. Narcissistic partners can flirt with numerous people by sending them messages on Facebook, inappropriately commenting on their photos with sexual or obscene messages for all to see, ‘following’ a number of shady accounts, as well as posting photos of themselves with exes, crushes, and people with whom they’re having affairs, all under the guise of them being ‘friends.’ Should their victims ever call them out on their strange behavior, the narcissist will then gaslight the victim into thinking he or she is going crazy. They trespass the boundaries of their relationships frequently and with malice, with the intention of skirting accountability and with callous disregard for the feelings of their victims. They enjoy seeing their reactions to their despicable behavior. However, true, full-fledged narcissists create love triangles deliberately in order to provoke their significant others. Now, it’s certainly possible for someone lower on the spectrum of toxicity to aggravate their partners with their lack of discretion and loyalty without meaning to sometimes garden-variety jerks or cheaters are not even fully cognizant they could be caught. – Megha Mohan, Cheating and manipulation: Confessions of a gaslighter ![]() ![]() But they would build over time, and she then started to believe.” She was ‘paranoid’, she was ‘crazy’, she was ‘full of drama’. “I deliberately used demeaning language to make her lose confidence in her reading of the situation, of my infidelity. They will, of course, deny that they are doing this – and it’s easy to convince anyone who is suspicious of their behavior that such a focus on their online behavior is “crazy.”įor example, observe what a self-confessed gaslighter told BBC news when asked about the role his gaslighting played in covering his tracks on social media: In order to understand how and exactly why narcissists use these platforms for such petty power plays, it’s essential that we remember that they tend to be insatiable in their attention-seeking and their desire to create harems of people who adore them. It gives them easy access to multiple victims and the ability to manufacture love triangles in covert, insidious ways. Social media is a veritable playground for malignant narcissists. Here are five ways malignant narcissists – those without empathy and with an excessive sense of entitlement – use social media to exploit, manipulate and destroy their victims: 1. ![]() Social media has just given them an extra tool to terrorize people. Therefore, our study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of peer-reviewed studies to estimate the prevalence of all the symptoms, signs, or abnormal laboratory parameters extending beyond the acute phase of COVID-19 reported to date. However, a broad overview of all the possible longstanding effects of COVID-19 is still needed. ![]() In parallel, hundreds of scientific publications, including cohorts studying specific effects of the disease and lists of case reports, have been described 6. Since first reported, there has been a vast amount of social media patient groups, polls, comments, and scientific articles aiming to describe the chronicity of COVID-19. However, it has not yet been established how sex, gender, age, ethnicity, underlying health conditions, viral dose, or progression of COVID-19 significantly affect the risk of developing long-term effects of COVID-19 5. Although such alteration is mainly reported in severe and critical disease survivors, the lasting effects also occur in individuals with a mild infection who did not require hospitalization 4. Symptoms, signs, or abnormal clinical parameters persisting two or more weeks after COVID-19 onset that do not return to a healthy baseline can potentially be considered long-term effects of the disease 3. Most recently, the term “post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection” (PASC), “long-COVID-19”, and “post-acute COVID-19”, has been utilized 2. Different authors have used several terms to describe prolonged symptoms following COVID-19 illness, such as “Long COVID-19”, “post-acute COVID-19”, “persistent COVID-19 symptoms”, “chronic COVID-19”, “post-COVID-19 manifestations”, “long-term COVID-19 effects”, “post COVID-19 syndrome”, “ongoing COVID-19”, “long-term sequelae”, or “long-haulers” as synonyms. The terminology has been confusing and not standardized. Although unprecedented efforts from the scientific and medical community have been directed to sequence, diagnose, treat, and prevent COVID-19, individuals' lasting effects after the acute phase of the disease are yet to be revealed. Since then, more than 175 million people worldwide have been infected after a year, and over 3.8 million people have died from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) 1. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was detected in China in December 2019. Multi-disciplinary teams are crucial to developing preventive measures, rehabilitation techniques, and clinical management strategies with whole-patient perspectives designed to address long COVID-19 care. The five most common symptoms were fatigue (58%), headache (44%), attention disorder (27%), hair loss (25%), and dyspnea (24%). It was estimated that 80% of the infected patients with SARS-CoV-2 developed one or more long-term symptoms. The included studies defined long-COVID as ranging from 14 to 110 days post-viral infection. The prevalence of 55 long-term effects was estimated, 21 meta-analyses were performed, and 47,910 patients were included (age 17–87 years). A total of 18,251 publications were identified, of which 15 met the inclusion criteria. For effects reported in two or more studies, meta-analyses using a random-effects model were performed using the MetaXL software to estimate the pooled prevalence with 95% CI. LitCOVID and Embase were searched to identify articles with original data published before the 1st of January 2021, with a minimum of 100 patients. The typical church/Christian metanarrative which shaped Baby Boomers in their formative years was the need for them to distance themselves from the corrupting influences of the world in order to stay faithful and effectively do the work of God. “The cross before me, the world behind me” It almost seemed like their involvement with para-church organisations gave them respite and created a balance which allowed them to continue to stay and serve in their home churches despite their misgivings. These organisations were often mentioned in the same breath when Baby Boomers spoke of what they felt was lacking in the institutional church such as the absence of good systemic Bible study or the overly denominationally focused agenda. Para-church organisations like BSF (Bible Study Fellowship), Navigators, Campus Crusade, and FES (Fellowship of Evangelical Students) featured strongly in the faith journey of many Baby Boomers and were very influential to their spiritual growth. The para-church movement in Singapore was very influential during their early and middle adulthood years This greatly shaped the way they would come to view relational ministry and mentoring in the church. 1 As such, it is likely that peer relationships were much more influential in their spiritual journey. Between the late 1960s to the 1980s, almost every 1 in 2 Singaporeans was a baby boomer. ![]() ![]() While some may think that this was a result of insufficient emphasis on relationships, a huge contributing factor was the population trend in Singapore at that time. As a result, many came to regard Christian authors or ministers as their “mentors”. Theirs was a generation which was content to admire their heroes from afar and looked to the public ministries of prominent Christians for guidance and modelling. Personal mentoring/discipleship was almost entirely absentĪ large majority of Baby Boomers did not have the privilege of personal mentoring relationships with an older person when they were growing up. This mental model was unconsciously transposed to the way they “did” church, where members were expected to be loyal and patient before earning the right to speak or make changes. This had a profound influence on their approach towards work-they were willing to “pay their dues” and wait patiently with unquestioning loyalty towards their companies for opportunities to eventually climb the ladder to positions of influence. ![]() With such strong enculturation, they learnt that “passions” and “idealistic views” on life were not as important as being “obedient” or “respectful” to authorities who knew better. The trends presented are definitely not representative of the experiences of all in this generation but are, in our opinion, worthy of consideration.įamily and workplace values were imported into the churchĭuring their formative years, Baby Boomers usually had strict parents who tended to dictate many aspects of their lives, such as what area of study and career they should pursue. This e-Commentary seeks to present a snapshot of some trends that emerged from our qualitative ethnography with Baby Boomer Christians from 16 churches across nine denominations in Singapore. Thus, after our research with Millennial Christians, the Baby Boomers were the next group that we concentrated on. One of the core goals of the Generations Project is to facilitate meaningful conversations between the different generations so that greater unity can be nurtured through deeper empathy. Due to their hard work and stage of life, most top leadership positions in churches are currently held by Christians of this generation and, as a result, there is seldom much effort made to understand them. Mention the term “Baby Boomers” and, depending on the age of the person you are speaking to, you may get comments ranging from “industrious” and “resilient” to “narrow minded” and “stubborn”. ![]() |
